Honda’s reputation for solidly-built cars still bleeds over into a quiet, comfortable driving experience. It won’t excite, but it won’t alarm either. The Passport accelerates exactly as fast as its two-ton frame will let it, and despite some body roll the SUV doesn’t feel like it will tip over in hard cornering.

This V6 is unobtrusive, and at no point will it stun drivers with its performance, soundtrack, or fuel economy. Over at Kia, the Telluride’s similarly old-school V6 nets 291 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. A new 2.4-liter four-cylinder makes 265 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque.

This year, Toyota manages similar figures with less motor. The Blazer, for example, produces 308 hp from its optional V6. Honda’s V6 stacks well against the competition, which at the very least offers a similar engine as an optional extra. The Passport’s plain interior is very similar to that of the Ridgeline pickup and the previous-generation Pilot. The trouble is, at its price, there are just lots of more versatile three-row competitors that can keep up with it on features, dynamics and room. This is only so so economy, but it’s largely on par with the Passport’s rivals, with an equivalently optioned Blazer managing 24 mpg combined. Unburdened, the EPA claims the Passport will manage 21 mpg combined (19 city, 24 highway). That extends to the TrailSport, which despite its aggro flares and all-terrain tires, has only middling off-road capability, though it does have 8.1 inches of ground clearance and its terrain modes work well. Select “Sport” on the push-button drive mode selector and one could almost have fun in this 4,200-pound SUV, but the Passport is more about getting you where you want to go quietly and comfortably than having fun. The engine delivers smooth, reliable power without waking the dead or wowing the vehicle’s occupants with its acceleration. Combined with a nine-speed automatic transmission, it can also tow up to 5,000 pounds. The Passport’s standard V6 makes a healthy 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. It isn’t a performance SUV, but the 2023 Honda Passport comes with a standard 280-horsepower V6 and can accelerate to 60 mph in a brisk 6.2 seconds.

At the top of the line is the $47,905 Elite, with even more trimmings. Next up is the $44,945 TrailSport, an “off-road lite” trim, offering unique bumpers, 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires and roof rails for your gear.

The Passport lineup begins with the $42,445 EX-L (including a $1,345 destination fee), and while that’s considerably higher than the base Blazer or Telluride, the base Passport comes well equipped, with features like selectable drive modes, an eight-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple Carplay compatibility and a powered tailgate. Despite being almost a foot shorter on the outside than the new 2023 Pilot, the Passport offers 89% of that SUV’s cargo space. While the most popular midsizes are three-rows like the Pilot, Kia Telluride and Toyota Highlander, two rows like the Passport, Chevrolet Blazer and Ford Edge don’t have to compromise their second-row space or cargo holds to fit a wayback seat, so if you don’t really need a third row, they can offer similar or more room and practicality in a smaller footprint. Every Passport has the same standard 3.5-liter V6 engine and all-wheel drive (AWD), but the aforementioned trims differentiate each model. There only three trims, but even fewer configurations.

After a major update last year, the Passport and its three trim levels-EX-L, Trailsport and Elite-see no changes for 2023. At 189.1 inches long, it falls neatly between the automaker’s compact CR-V and its newly-enlarged Pilot. A two-row machine in a segment dominated by three-row players, the 2023 Honda Passport falls on the smaller end of the midsize SUV spectrum.
